Nigeria: Akpabio Advises Corps Members to Be Job Creators
AKWA Ibom State Governor Godswill
Akpabio has yesterday called on members of the National Youth Service Corps
(NYSC) to take advantage of the skills acquisition programme during their
primary assignment to create jobs for themselves.
Akpabio, who spoke at the closing of
orientation course for the 2014 Batch 'C' corps members deployed to the state,
lamented that unemployment is posing a serious threat to the society.
The governor then advised the corps
members not only to be self-employed, but to be job creators.
He said: "The service year
offers you a platform to prepare for the future. I want to specifically advise
you to pursue skills acquisition programme during your primary assignment to
increase your capacity to meet global socio-economic challenges of the 21st
century.
"The reality is that
unemployment is posing a threat to our society. You must strive not only to be
self employed but to be job creators."
He said that his government would not
relent in paying attention to the welfare of corps members in the state.
Meanwhile, ahead of 2015 general
elections, a renowned evangelist, Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, has advised politicians
in the country to respect the sacredness of human beings by eschewing violence
during and after elections so as not to shed anybody's blood through killing.
Ukpai, who gave this admonition,
while interacting with journalists on arrangements by the Uma Ukpai
Evangelistic Association towards the church's 2014 Uyo Miracle Convention
holding from December 14-21 at the Association's Victory Cathedral along Edet
Akpan Avenue in Uyo, the state capital, said that churches have been praying
for politicians with principle who are ready to serve and not to lord over the
people.
Akpabio also urged the youth corps
members to excel more than their predecessors, saying his government would
continue to reward outstanding corps members in the state.
He further said: "On our part,
the government will not relent in paying adequate attention to the welfare of
corps members. We are committed to the security of lives and property of all
who reside in Akwa Ibom State.
"Having increased the state
allowance of corps members, we shall not relent until NYSC in Akwa Ibom is
placed ahead of other states of the federation in every aspect."
The governor also warned the corps members
to shun acts capable of jeopardising the peace of the state and Nigeria as a
whole, saying: "Also, you must be security conscious and place premium on
your health. HIV/AIDS and Ebola virus infections pose a great challenge to
everybody. As educated people, we expect you to be vanguards against the spread
of the diseases."
